steenbreek
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
From Middle Dutch steenbreke; compare Old High German steinbrehha, Old Saxon stēnbreka. By surface analysis, steen (“stone”) + breken (“to break”), thus literally, “stone-breaker”. The suffix -e (corresponding to the Germanic agent noun suffix *-ô) visible in the Middle Dutch has mostly vanished in Modern Dutch.
