Etymology

From Old High German strewen, from Proto-Germanic *strawjaną (to strew), from Proto-Indo-European *strew- (to spread, strew). Cognate with German streuen, Dutch strooien, English strew, Icelandic strá, Swedish strö, Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌾𐌰𐌽 (straujan). From the same Proto-Indo-European root as Latin struō (I build, prepare, arrange).
