Inherited from Old Polish sieczeń from Proto-Slavic *sěčьnь (“January, winter month of cutting wood”), derived from Proto-Slavic *sěča (“cutting wood”) from Proto-Slavic *sěťi (“to cut”), with -ty- possibly by influence from the word tyka (“pole, rod, branch, beam”).
