Equivalent to synd (sin) +‎ flod (flood). From German Sündflut, a reinterpretation of Sintflut (still the standard form in German) after the word Sünde (sin) (compare also Dutch zondvloed). The form Sintflut contains an obsolete prefix sin- (ever).
