From Middle Dutch toghel, teugel,[1] from Proto-Germanic *tugilaz (“rein on a horse”),[2] whence also Old Norse tygill, Old English tygel, Old High German zugil (German Zügel). Ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *dewk-.
