thrombendarteriectomy (plural thrombendarteriectomies)

  1. (surgery) An operation to remove a thrombus and any diseased inner lining causing the obstruction of an artery

Usage notes

edit
  • Thrombendarteriectomy combines three prefixes and one suffix. A number of spelling variants which add interfixes at various points are attested; the most extreme is thromboendoarterioectomy. Conversely, a few variants omit the i from the stem of arteri-, perhaps having mistaken it for an unnecessary interfix. Such variants are established (accepted) despite this omission. Finally, several variants dividing thromb-, end-, or both from the rest of the word with hyphens.
