From Latin triptōtum, from Ancient Greek τρίπτωτος (tríptōtos), from τρι- (tri-, “three”) + πίπτω (píptō, “to fall”) + -τος (-tos, verbal adjective–forming suffix), influenced by the verbal noun πτῶσις (ptôsis, “inflection”).
