editFrom Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(t)sam (“hair (of head)”). Cognate with Burmese ဆံ (hcam, “hair (of head)”), Old Chinese 髟 (“long hair”), Tibetan སམ་དལ (sam dal, “moustache”) and Jingpho sam (“hair”). Compare Lhao Vo xae, Zaiwa cam and Hpon ăshɛ́.
