From u- + forsonlig, first part from Old Norse ú-, ó-, from Proto-Germanic *un-, from Proto-Indo-European *n̥-, a prefix use of the particle *ne (“not”). Last part from the verb forsone (“reconcile”), from Middle Low German vorsōnen or German versöhnen (“reconcile”), from Middle High German versüenen, versuonen, from Old High German firsuonen.
