Inherited from Vulgar Latin *vēnāre, from Classical Latin vēnārī, present active infinitive of vēnor (hunt), from Proto-Indo-European *weyh₁- (to chase, pursue), or from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁- (to strive, wish, love) (disputedly).
