From vāci (“Germans”) + -ietis. Cognates include Lithuanian vókietis.

Usage notes edit
Vāciešis is the preferred term for “Germans”; vāci is possible but much less frequent. In the genitive, when used adjectivally, however, vācu is the preferred form. In particular, only vācu valoda (“German language”) is possible.
