Etymology
editFrom Sanskrit वज्रपाणि (vajrapāṇi), a compound of वज्र (vajra, “a kind of crossed mace; a thunderbolt”) + पाणि (pāṇi, “hand”, noun).

- having a diamond mace in his hand
- Taṃ kho pana vajirapāṇiṃ yakkhaṃ bhagavā ceva passati ambaṭṭho ca māṇavo.
- And the Blessed One perceived the spirit bearing the thunderbolt, and so did Ambaṭṭha the Brahman.
