Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wel- (to tear, to spend). Cognates include Latgalian volūda (id.), Lithuanian valandà (hour, moment, time).

Alternatively related to Proto-West Slavic *volati (to call). Confer Polish wołać, Czech volat.
