Etymology

edit

From viesis (guest) +‎ -nīca. A neologism coined in the 1870s by either Krišjānis Valdemārs or Fricis Brīvzemnieks in 1872, originally in the form viesnīce; the modern form appeared later in the same decade and soon became popular. It has replaced previously used expressions like viesu nams and gastūzis (a borrowing from German).[1]
