Etymology

From Middle Dutch voetboge (“arbalest”), voetboghe. Equivalent to voet (“foot”) +‎ boog (“bow, arch”). Named after the habit of keeping the arc in place with a foot when drawing. The sense “arch of a foot” is more recent.
