Serbo-Croatian

Etymology

Vuk + -o- +‎ -pis

Noun

vukopis m

  1. (derogatory) The phonological orthography that is now used to write the Serbo-Croatian language.

Usage notes

The term is used pejoratively by some Croatian linguists. The orthography was originally devised in the 19th century by Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and his associates and was used mostly for the Serbian variety of Serbo-Croatian, but eventually came to be used for the Croatian variety as well, replacing several other orthographies.
