Etymology

edit

Borrowed from a South Slavic language, compare Old Church Slavonic забѣль (zabělĭ) ("enclosed forest"), and modern Serbo-Croatian zabijeliti ("to whiten, to mark a tree by cutting its bark"), used in Dušan's Code as ("mark a tree by cutting its bark to show forbidden entrance"). Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *bělъ (white).[1]
