Etymology edit

From Proto-Germanic *twiskaz (twofold, double), from Proto-Indo-European *dwís (twice, doubly; in two). See also Old English betweonum, composed of be- (by, near) + twēonum (the two, dative plural noun) (compare the numeral Old High German zwēne).
