From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śwō, *śun- (dog); compare Latvian suns, Old Prussian sunnis (dog), Proto-Slavic *sǫka (bitch), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ (dog). Cognate to Armenian շուն (šun), Sanskrit श्वन् (śvā́), Latin canis, Proto-Germanic *hundaz.
