Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dāvàti. By surface analysis, дать (datʹ) +‎ -ва́ть (-vátʹ). Cognate with Ukrainian дава́ти (daváty, to give), Belarusian дава́ць (davácʹ, to give), Bulgarian давам (davam, I give) (imperfective), Serbo-Croatian да́вати, dávati, Polish dawać (to give).
