Etymology edit

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀑𑀟𑁆𑀠𑁆 (oḍḍh-), from Proto-Dravidian *uṭ- (to wear). Compare modern Tamil உடு (uṭu, dress), Malayalam ഉടുക്കുക (uṭukkuka), Kannada ಉಡು (uḍu). Cognate with Bengali ওড়না (ōṛona, shawl) and Assamese উৰ (ur, put on clothes).
