Inherited from Prakrit 𑀕𑀼𑀪𑀇 (gubhaï), 𑀕𑀼𑀳𑀇 (guhaï), from Sanskrit गुफति (gupháti, strings together). Contaminated by Prakrit 𑀕𑀁𑀣𑀇 (gaṃthaï) which derives from Sanskrit ग्रन्थयति (grantháyati, ties).

Cognate with Nepali गुथ्नु (guthnu), Odia ଗୁନ୍ଥିବା (gunthiba), Maithili गुँथब (gũthab) and Marathi गुथणें (guthṇẽ). Doublet of गुहना (guhnā), गुतना (gutnā), and गूँधना (gū̃dhnā).
