From an unattested Sauraseni Prakrit [script needed] (*vijjhāyati) (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀛𑀸𑀯𑁂𑀇 (vijjhāvei)), from the Prakrit cognate of Sanskrit वि- (vi-, away) + an unattested Prakrit [script needed] (*jhai, to burn), itself a vernacular variant of Sanskrit क्षै (kṣai, to burn), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰey-. Cognate with Punjabi ਬੁਝਾਉਣਾ (bujhāuṇā) / بُجھاؤݨا (bujhā'oṇā), Sindhi اُجهائِڻُ / उझाइणु, Marathi विझवणे (vijhavṇe).
