From Jurchen 撒哈良 (sa-ha-liang /⁠saxalian⁠/, black), from Proto-Tungusic *sakarīn (black). Compare also Evenki сакарӣн (sakarīn), Oroch сакаи (sakai), Ulch сахари (saxari), Orok сагари (sagari), сāри (sāri) and Nanai сахарин (saxarĩ).
