Compound of (から) (kara, empty) + () (taki, heating, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb () (taku, to heat (as on a stove); to burn (as firewood)).).[1][2] The taki changes to daki as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
