NounEdit

算数 (uncountable, hiragana さんすう, romaji sansū)

  1. arithmetic; calculation

SynonymsEdit

  • 計算 (けいさん, keisan) (calculation)

VerbEdit

算数 + する (hiragana さんすうする, romaji sansū suru)

  1. (rare) to do arithmetic; to calculate
    ただ計算方法 (けいさんほうほう) (おし)えるのではなく、算数 (さんすう)する (こころ) (はぐく)むことが大切 (たいせつ)だ。
tada keisan hōhō o oshieru no de wa naku, sansū suru kokoro o hagukumu koto ga taisetsu da.
It is important to foster an arithmetic way of thinking, rather than merely to teach how to calculate.

Usage notesEdit

  • This irregular, -suru verb form with 算数 is quite rare, and nearly used as a coined word. Instead, use "計算する" (keisan suru) to mean "to calculate".
