German edit

Etymology edit

From now obsolete Dutch een afsteker maken (to go by one of the boats of a ship). Compare afsteken (to set sail). The German verb abstechen means in some contexts “to contrast, to diverge” and possibly also “to branch off” (compare Stichstraße (small dead-end street branching off from a road)). Hence the further semantic development.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈapˌʃtɛçɐ/
  • (file)

Noun edit

Abstecher m (strong, genitive Abstechers, plural Abstecher)

  1. detour, side trip
Wenn wir nach Hamburg fahren, könnten wir einen Abstecher nach Bremen machen.
If we go to Hamburg we could make a detour to Bremen.
