From Proto-Indo-European *oywos (law, custom), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ey- (to go). Cognate with Sanskrit [script?] (éva, way, course; demeanor, conduct, habit).

Alternative etymology derives from an earlier *aigwaz, possibly related to Latin aequus (equal, just, fair).
