From Middle High German vēch (spotted, mottled fur), from the adjective vēch, vēhe, (“multicoloured”, whence obsolete German fech, feh), from Old High German fēh, from Proto-West Germanic *faih, from Proto-Germanic *faihaz. Cognate with Scots faw.
