Phono-semantic matching of English tractor, whence also latinised German Traktor. After the Low German and Ripuarian verb trecken (“to drag, to pull”). Compare the same in Dutch trekker (“tractor”).

Usage notes edit
- In Northern Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia, the word Trecker is strongly predominant in everyday use, while Traktor is mostly reserved to very formal contexts. Elsewhere Trecker is usually understood, but uncommon.
