Wiktionary:Entry layout explained does not yet distinguish between the full format typically used for main entries and an abbreviated format typically used for secondary entries. This vote seeks to describe which entries should ordinarily be considered secondary entries and what details they should ordinarily exclude. If approved, the following text will be added to in WT:ELE#Basics:

===Main entries===
For English entries, the main entry is usually that of the lemma form: the singular form for most nouns, the bare infinitive form for most verbs, and the positive form for most adjectives:
Some kinds of words may have an alternate main form or may need to be handled differently (perhaps having more than one “main form”, for example). This includes forms with unique senses, pronouns, defective verbs, and in some cases, words in other inflected languages. Other kinds of words may have only one form, including prepositions and words from non-inflected languages.
When the situation is unclear, editors are advised to use their best judgment on a case-by-case basis.

The first paragraph of the "Inflections" section will be changed to this:

The term of the entry is given in boldface type in the line following the "Part of speech" header. Key grammatical properties follow on the same line (e.g. gender, case, and number). For main entries with other forms, a few key forms are given in parentheses. For secondary entries, the only inflections shown in the inflection line are the headword itself and the lemma. See {{infl}}.

The following will be appended to the paragraph in the "Definitions" section:

For secondary entries, only a brief gloss definition for the primary sense should ordinarily be given, along with a prominent link to the main entry. E.g. on (deprecated template usage) words:
words (plural of word)
  1. Units of language.
    This example sentence has six words.
    • Common English translation of a quote from Pindar,
      Words have a longer life than deeds.

The following sentence will be added to the first paragraph of the sections "Synonyms", "Further semantic relations", and "Translations":

This section is usually only given in full for main entries. For secondary entries, a link to the main entry is usually preferable.
