German edit

Etymology edit

From Middle High German erstaten.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ɛɐ̯ˈʃtatn̩ /
  • (file)

Verb edit

erstatten (weak, third-person singular present erstattet, past tense erstattete, past participle erstattet, auxiliary haben) (ditransitive) [+accusative] [+dative]

  1. to reimburse, to refund
Wir werden Ihnen die Kosten erstatten.
We will reimburse you for your costs.
  2. to grant, to administer, to make, to do, synonym of abstatten

Usage notes edit

  • (reimburse): As in the example above, the German construction is unlike the English. The expenses are the direct object of the verb and the receiver is given in the dative case (as in English pay back).
  • (administer): Frequent accusative objects are form-bound activities, now especially Bericht and Anzeige, else oldish Glückwunsch, Gruß, Besuch, Nachricht, Bescheid.
