From Middle Dutch gheburen, from Old Dutch geburran (to happen, occur), from Proto-Germanic *gaburjaną (to beseem, be due, arise, emerge, happen). Cognate with German gebühren (to be due), Middle English ȝebürien ("to belong to, beseem, be due"; > Scots byrde, byrd, bird (it behoves; ought; should)).
