From Middle Dutch gheburen, from Old Dutch geburran (to happen, occur), from Proto-Germanic *gaburjaną (to beseem, be due, arise, emerge, happen). Cognate with Low German geböhren (to happen, beseem) and böhren (to happen, beseem), German gebühren (to be due), Middle English ȝebürien ("to belong to, beseem, be due"; > Scots byrde, byrd, bird (it behoves; ought; should)).
