Inherited from Vulgar Latin *wadaniāre, of Germanic origin; from Frankish *waiþanōjan, *waiþanōn (“to hunt, graze”) (a calque of Latin petere). Compare French gagner, Catalan guanyar, Portuguese ganhar, cf. also Spanish ganar.
