German edit

Etymology edit

From Middle High German swëben, from Old High German swebēn, from Proto-Germanic *swibāną (to move), from Proto-Indo-European *ksweybʰ- (to twist, turn around).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈʃveːbən/, [ˈʃveː.bm̩], [-bən]
  • (file)

Verb edit

schweben (weak, third-person singular present schwebt, past tense schwebte, past participle geschwebt, auxiliary sein or haben)

  1. to hover, soar, float, drift

Usage notes edit

  • The auxiliary is always sein when there is movement from one place to another: Die Drohne ist weiter nach Norden geschwebt. (The drone floated further towards the north.) When there is no movement or movement within a confined space, the normal choice is haben, but sein is also possible: Die Drohne hat / ist über unsern Köpfen geschwebt. (The drone hovered above our heads.)
