From Proto-Finnic *cilta, earlier *tilta, from a Baltic language (cf. Latvian tilts, Lithuanian tiltas). Cognates include Finnish silta, Ingrian silta, silda, Livonian sīlda, Livvi sildu, Ludian šild, Veps süud, sild, Võro sild, Votic siltõ and Northern Sami šaldi (the latter is derived from Proto-Finnic).
