From late Middle English, from Medieval Latin trāchēa (the windpipe) (also borrowed as Late Latin trāchīa), from Ancient Greek τρᾱχεῖᾰ ᾰ̓ρτηρῐ́ᾱ (trākheîa artēríā, windpipe, trachea).
