From Old Norse ábóti, a term borrowed, likely via Old English abbod, from Latin abbās (“abbot”), itself from Ancient Greek ἀββᾶς (abbâs), from Aramaic אבא (’abbā, “father”). Compare the Old Norse variants abbáti, abbati, which may come more directly from Latin or be under stronger influence from it, or hail from the Old English variants abbat, abbad, rather than abbod. Compare also abbadís (“abbess”) and abba.
