Etymology edit

From Ottoman Turkish اوركمك (ürkmek), from Proto-Turkic *ürk- (to be afraid).[1] Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (ürk-, to be afraid, run away in fear), Kyrgyz үркүү (ürküü, to be frightened of), Uzbek hurkmoq.

ürkmek (third-person singular simple present ürker)

  1. (intransitive) to fear, be afraid of, dread, wince
  2. (intransitive) to quail, boggle
