đu (“to swing”) +‎ càng (“claw”). This phrase invokes images of the Vietnam War — of soldiers who hitched onto the side of military helicopters, and of those who tried to evacuate during the Fall of Saigon by "swinging" and "clawing" onto retreating American helicopters.
