From Proto-Polynesian from Proto-Oceanic *kali (compare with Maori kari)[1] ~ *keli (compare with Samoan ʻeli and Tongan keli) from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kali₂ (compare with Malay gali).[2][3] Doublet of ʻeli.[1]
