Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἔξυπνος (éxupnos), from Hellenistic Koine Greek ἔξυπνος (éxupnos, awake, aware, alert), from Ancient Greek ἐξ (ex) + ὕπνος (húpnos, sleep). Doublet of ξύπνιος (xýpnios).
