Learned borrowing from Koine Greek ἀκανθόχοιρος (akanthókhoiros, porcupine), from ἄκανθος (ákanthos, acanthus, a prickly plant) + χοῖρος (khoîros, pig). Doublet of σκαντζόχοιρος (skantzóchoiros).
