Etymology edit

Compound from Ancient Greek ἄκανθος (ákanthos, acanthus, a prickly plant) + χοῖρος (khoîros, pig). Displaced ὕστριξ (hústrix, porcupine, bristles, torture instrument). Secondary sense of hedgehog displaced ἐχῖνος (ekhînos, hedgehog, etc.).
