From Byzantine Greek ακουμβιστήριον (akoumbistḗrion), equivalent to ακουμπώ (akoumpó, to touch) +‎ -τήρι (-tíri), following the example of similar tool nouns with that suffix such as σκαλιστήρι (skalistíri, hoe) and ποτιστήρι (potistíri, watering).
