Etymology

edit

The word shows some resemblance to Latvian dupêtiês (dead sound) and Serbo-Croatian dűpiti (to slay), but the initial γδ- found in some compounds suggests a Pre-Greek origin. Compare Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewp-.
