Learnedly from unattested stem *εκκωφαν- + -τικός (-tikós), a calque of French assourdissant. The stem is formed from Ancient Greek εκ- (ek-) + κωφαίνω (kōphaínō) as a calque of Modern Greek ξεκουφαίνω (xekoufaíno).[1]
