μέρμνος
Ancient Greek

editEtymology
editUnknown, but the Oxyrhynchus Papyri claim that the word was Lydian, comparing the Lydian dynasty of the Mermnadae. However, Beekes prefers connecting the word with μόρφνος (mórphnos, “kind of eagle”), which shows that the word is Pre-Greek, in view of the alternation μ/φ.
