σήτα
Greek
editAlternative forms
edit- σίτα (síta)
Etymology
editNominal formation probably cognate with, though apparently not derived from, Ancient Greek σήθω (sḗthō, “to sieve, sift”).[1]
Other theories take the word as borrowed from Slavic; see Proto-Slavic *sìto (“sieve”) for more. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
Pronunciation
editNoun
editσήτα • (síta) f
- sieve (a tool with a fine mesh used to sift flour, sand, etc.)
- window screen (a mesh set in a frame used to keep foreign debris and animals out of a building without blocking fresh airflow)
