From Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁dʰ-. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *dědъ (grandfather), Lithuanian dė̃dė, dė̃dis (uncle) and Latvian dȩ̀ds (old man). Probably originally an onomatopoeia of babies' speech.
